To determine which carpet is right for both residential and commercial applications, check out the following:
- Carpet fibers play a major part in the selection. Some of the best fiber options include nylon and wool which were mentioned earlier. Other materials include Olefin, which provide excellent resistance to moisture.
- Beyond fibers, other construction elements also help determine how well a certain carpet would perform in a given app, whether in homes or commercial establishments. The elements could include the pile types, dyeing methods, attachment methods and the kind of backing that is used.
- Another factor in choosing the right commercial or residential carpet is the color. There are two main ways in which color is added to the fibers, including solution dyeing and stock dyeing. In solution dyeing, the hue pigment is added to the yarn during manufacturing which results to color that extends throughout the material. When the fibers are stock dyed, there are pigments added to the yarn after manufacturing but before they are turned into spun yarn. It is a low cost process compared to the previous process, with only a bit decrease in fiber performance.
- Another integral factor is the types of piles. There are two basic pile types used in constructing carpet, the cut pile and loop pile. For all, the quality of the flooring and how well it performs will depend on the density and the amount of twist in the pile. In a cut pile, the fibers are cut at the top surface instead of looped back into the backing. It results in tufts of yarn that stand up. Fibers could be cut all at the same level to create a non-textured, flat surface or they could be cut at different heights for a textured finish. Quality carpets use tufts made from two or three yarn plies tightly twisted together and heat-treated so it will not unravel. The denser and tighter the tufts, the better the carpet's performance would be.
